It explores the boom of prostitution in the British 17th century where Bawds (brothel owners) influenced laws through their services. Mothers auction their daughters virginity and a man can publicly own a mistress aside his wife.
The story follows Margaret Wells, a bawd and a victim of sexual abuse as a child by another bawd, pimps out her harlots and daughters to influential men while avoiding series of attacks and schemes by her former bawd, Mary Quigley, current rival and influential society woman. Her fight with Quigley unsettles her family, life and business.
